Driving licence exchange in Czech Republic

If you are planning on obtaining a Czech Republic driving licence we would be glad to help! However, doing it yourself may also be an option if you are already in the Czech Republic. Here is some information to get you started.

Driving licences are valid for 10 years.

Since January 19, 2013 Czech Republic issues drivers' licences with a validity period of 5 years, if the driver's licence certifies also categories C1, C1 + E, C, C + E, D1, D1 + E, D and D + E, in the other cases the driving licence is issued for a period of 10 years, ie. categorie AM, A1, A2, A, B1, B, B + E and T.

Driving licences for elderly drivers are valid for the same periods but the holder of the driving licence is required to undergo a medical check 6 months before reaching 65 and 68 years of age (at the latest on your 65th and 68th birthday respectively). You subsequently have to undergo a medical check every two years.

If you hold a driving licence for life (i.e. one that remains administratively valid for an unlimited period) that was issued by another EU country, you will not have to renew the licence after changing your usual place of residence.

Non-EU driving licences - exchange & recognition

You must exchange your non-EU driving licence within 3 months of moving (if you have permanent residence or temporary residence in the Czech Republic for a period longer than one year).

To exchange your non-EU driving licence:

  1. go to the competent municipal authority, according to your place of habitual residence (or place of study) in the Czech Republic.
  2. hand in the following documents:
  • valid identity document together with either a permanent residence or temporary residence document valid for more than 1 year,
  • your foreign driving licence,
  • one passport photograph (size 35 x 45 mm).

If you have previously exchanged a non-EU driving licence for an EU licence in another EU country, you can use it in the Czech Republic.
